Under the general direction of the Senior Manager/ Assistant
Director of Environmental Services and within established hospital
and department policies and procedures, the Area Manager(s) manage
a broad range of activities related to the development,
implementation, and oversight of institution-wide Environmental
Services programs. Make broad operational decisions consistent with
the missions of the hospital and the department.Assists Senior
Manager / Assistant Director with the development, implementation
and interpretation of policies and procedures. Assists with the
development of operating and capital budgets. Responsibility for
budget oversight for areas of operational responsibility.Supports
supervisors in interpretation of hospital and department policies
and procedures.Responsible for the direct management of up to 4
Environmental Services Supervisors and indirect management of up to
75 Environmental Services staff.PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Responsible for the administration of the department in absence
of the Senior Manager and Asst Director. Assists the Environmental
Services Leadership team with the development, implementation and
interpretation of policies and procedures.
- Assists the Senior Manager and Asst Director with the direction
and implementation of the department's in-service training programs
and with ongoing on-the-job training and staff development.
- Conducts and documents regular staff meetings; interacts with
other departments to plan, evaluate, and coordinate the activities
of the Environmental Services Department.
- Assists with the development and/or implementation of service
improvement initiatives (organization-wide and area-specific),
participating (and sometimes leading) on organizational and area
improvement teams.
- Lead the effort to ensure that Divisional resources
(equipment/personnel/resources) are deployed efficiently, including
but not limited to continual monitoring and assessment of JCAHO
compliance requirements.
- Establish positive and effective relationships with Service
Line Nursing Leadership and key Support Services staff to develop
trust between departments who share a common goal - patient and
staff satisfaction.
- Makes recommendations relating to resource allocation and
systems management. Purchases and manages inventory and
distribution of supplies and equipment related to operational
responsibilities.
- Interfaces with vendors and service customers to coordinate
services, building/grounds maintenance, pest control, and temporary
help.
- Fiscal management responsibilities include, in part: on-going
accountability for cost as related to daily service, appropriate
scheduling of projects to ensure best utilization of resources -
both human and material, appropriate use of over-time budget and
with the provision of data necessary to develop the operating and
capital budgets.
- May be present in secure medication storage areas and are
allowed incidental access to medications.
- Assigns hours and areas of work to provide optimum services
while ensuring maximum productivity. Establishes work parameters
for areas of operational responsibility. Reviews daily resource
requirements and productivity indices. Coordinates staffing, as
required, in each area of responsibility. Prepares and submits
computerized reports documenting productivity.
- Human Resource management functions include, in part:
interviewing, hiring, orienting, performance evaluations,
counseling and disciplinary actions for four (4) Supervisors and up
to Seventy-Five (75) staff members.
- As a member of the department and division's management team,
Area Managers must foster an environment that encourages high
productivity and job satisfaction.
- Acts as a liaison between subordinate supervisors and the Human
Resources Department. Counsel's direct and indirect reports
regarding appropriate employee relations, strategies, and
techniques.
- Directly coordinates cleaning activities with user departments
to provide effective & efficient service delivery. Adjusts programs
as necessary to enhance service delivery. Conducts and documents
routine quality service inspections to monitor service delivery and
determine opportunities for improvement.
- Completes on a timely basis (including but not limited to)
employee accident reporting forms, quality assurance inspection
forms, project logs, performance appraisals, disciplinary actions,
and patient satisfaction surveys.
- Inspects functional areas to determine quality and quantity of
services provided. Evaluates the physical condition of the facility
and prioritizes and develops action plans to address deficiencies
on an ongoing basis. Recommends painting, repairs, furnishings, and
relocation of equipment to improve sanitation, appearance, and
efficiency.
- Performs other similar or related duties as assigned or
necessary.SKILLS/ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:
- Ability to pro-actively interact and/or negotiate with
customers in sometimes stressful situations.
- Accounting and analytical skills required to assist with budget
preparation, staffing, quality and operations data analysis and
reporting.
- Requires proficiency in the use of computer programs (Kronos,
Peoplesoft, MS Word, Excel, Access, Outlook, etc.).
- Excellent interpersonal skills required to provide effective
horizontal and vertical management of personnel to develop and
maintain cooperative working relationships with hospital personnel.
Ability to proactively interact with patients, visitors, and
staff.
- Requires current knowledge of regulatory codes and
accreditation standards (DPH, JCAHO, EPA, OSHA, DEP, etc.) related
to operational responsibilities.
- Requires training and employee relations skills.
- Requires analytical skills to appropriately assess training and
quality improvement needs and to implement effective programs.
- Requires independent judgement needed to deviate from standard
policies, procedures, and schedules as necessary.EDUCATION:
- Bachelor's degree preferred. Additionally, a minimum of 5 years
of progressively more responsible experience.
- Superlative service excellence and the ability to place the
needs of the customer first.
- Excellent demonstrated communications skills both oral and
written.
- Demonstrated management and training skills to train, motivate,
direct and control activities of subordinates.LICENSES,
CERTIFICATIONS, and/or REGISTRATIONS (if applicable):
- Must become a Certified Health Care Environmental Services
Professional (CHESP) within the 1st Year of employment.WORKING
CONDITIONS:
- Requires ability to conduct multiple daily tours of the
facility.
- Exposure to chemical agents and biomedical waste.
- Ability to manipulate up to 25 pounds.
- Flexibility to cover all shifts, as needed.Brigham and Women's
